The automotive giant Volvo has unveiled its first production model of a minivan — the EM90. This electric van is specifically designed for the Chinese market and will not be exported. The foundation of this innovation is the Zeekr 009 platform. The vehicle can travel up to 738 kilometers on a single charge.
The Zeekr brand is part of the Geely group, which also includes Volvo. It is important to note that they did not significantly change the original 009 model. The Swedes modified the front fascia, installed headlights and taillights in their recognizable «Thor’s Hammer» style. Original interior details were also added.
If the external dimensions of the Volvo EM90 differ from the Zeekr (5209x2024x1867 millimeters with a wheelbase of 3205 millimeters), it will only be by a few millimeters. It should be noted that the model has become the largest minivan in the Volvo lineup and one of the largest in the world.
The Volvo EM90 is equipped with only one electric motor, which is located in the rear. It develops a power of 272 horsepower, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds. It is not yet known if other versions of this model will be added. In comparison, the Zeekr 009 model is equipped with all-wheel drive and two electric motors, with a combined power of 544 horsepower. The Zeekr 009 model can reach a speed of 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.
The 116 kilowatt-hour Volvo EM90 battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes at a station with the appropriate power. According to the Chinese CLTC driving cycle, the range reaches 738 kilometers. Although the WLTP cycle is closer to real-world operating conditions, Volvo’s results are still among the best in the world. The EM90 battery is also capable of charging other electric vehicles and powering household appliances.
The Volvo EM90 interior features a 2+2+2 layout. The second row features electrically adjustable seats with heating, ventilation, massage functions, and folding tables. For the convenience of rear passengers, a 15.6-inch foldable screen is installed in the rear part of the cabin. The front display on the dashboard is 15.4 inches in size and has a very minimalist design. The vehicle’s multimedia system supports 5G networks and is equipped with a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Touch-sensitive panels are located on the rear doors. They can be used to adjust the microclimate parameters in the rear of the cabin. The rear doors are equipped with electric drive.
The Volvo EM90 will be on sale soon.
It is interesting to note that the EM90 model was released in 2023. Exactly 70 years ago, Volvo introduced the Duett model, which can be considered the precursor to the new model. This model was conceived as a car that can be used for both family and commercial purposes. More than 100,000 of these vehicles were sold until 1969.
